On August 9, 1936, Foy Draper, of the University of Southern California  had the thrill of being a member of the  winning USA Olympic 400 Meter Relay Team consisting of Ralph Metcalfe, Jesse Owens, and anchor, Frank Wykoff.  Not only did the team win a Gold Medal, they also set a New World Record -- 39.8 seconds.

At age 28 --  after the attack on Pearl Harbor  (1941),  Draper became a member of the "97th Squadron of the 47th Bomb Group at Thelepte, Tunisia.  He flew an A-20B 'Havoc,' twin-engine attack bomber.  On Jan 4, 1943, shortly before the fateful battle of Kassarine Pass, he took off ..." ...(to) "Fonduck, Tunisia.  Foy and his two crewmen never returned ..."  wrote Perry Flippin, editor emeritus at the San Angelo Standard-Times newspaper on Monday, August 9, 2004.

Olympics

Dear Terri:
I have enjoyed reading about Frank Wykoff, but also my relative Foy Draper. Foy was killed before I was born, but the family stories about him and his Olympic exploits have been a staple of my life.

Your photos are the first I've seen of Foy. The sports columns are very interesting. Today, I finally found where Foy is buried -- the American cemetery in Tunisia, North Africa.

My mother was 5 years younger than Foy. They were first cousins. She remembered Foy was the only person she ever saw who could chase down a guinea.

I expect to be returning to your site often to relive that 1936 Olympics and other interesting highlights. You've done a great job building this tribute.

All best,
Perry Flippin

Comments:

OlympicsGreat site -- one of the only places I've been able to find a photograph of a relative, Foy Draper. (My grandmother's maiden name was Draper, and my mother's first cousin Perry Flippin told me once that Foy was kin, but I don't know exactly how closely we're related. Could account for my sprinting success in grade school.) Didn't realize my family's been at the center of attention for so long!

Thanks very much.
